SPX Flow Technology installs first spray drying technology for whey permeate in Brazil

September 23, 2011

SPX Flow Technology has recently completed the installation of Anhydro brand evaporation and drying equipment for Sooro Dairy in Brazil. The dairy is the first company to use spray drying technology for whey permeate in Brazil. This is the second installation of SPX equipment in the last two years for Sooro, located in southern Brazil.

The equipment will be used to process demineralized whey powder, whey protein concentrate (WPC) 35 and permeate. Whey, a by-product of cheese production, is the liquid that remains after milk has been curdled and strained.

Before Sooro was founded in 2000, small cheese producers in Brazil were unable to process the whey generated in cheese production. Whey had previously been treated as a waste product. Whey is rich in proteins, lactose and minerals, and the work of companies such as Sooro and SPX, with Anhydro evaporation and drying technologies, have turned it into a valuable product for the South American food industry.

SPX offers extensive global experience in food, beverage, and dairy processing, with a wide range of technologies deployed by engineering and project management centers around the world.

Steen Hedetoft, managing director and vice president for SPX Flow Technology in South America, formally turned over the installed SPX Anhydro equipment to Sooro Dairy with a "Taking Over Certificate" in mid-August.
